A promise was made to the people of Central Oregon – to provide access to higher education and opportunities that serve the unique needs of the region and to support innovative business development. By collaborating with OSU-Cascades’ leaders, our planning and design team is helping the university to refine and implement this vision with nimble planning and design that is climate-responsive and living-centered.

Reclaiming the Land

This project requires a bold, innovative and fearless spirit to imagine amazing possibilities.

The opportunity to shape the land as we implement the long-range campus plan is unique. SRG + CannonDesign is coordinating with OSU and their Reclamation & Remediation team to refine building siting and phasing decisions and to guide the development process.

OSU’s reclamation of the former pumice mine and remediation of the former landfill is restoring a damaged site in West Bend to be a transformative community asset. The goal is to be careful stewards of limited resources to ensure the campus is a vibrant space that attracts and supports students and represents Central Oregon’s sense of place and culture.

Full Range of Planning and Design Services

Our team of design leaders and planners has supported the expansion of OSU-Cascades in several roles. Edward J. Ray Hall opened its doors in 2022 and is a prominent connection point between the existing campus and future development. The Oval Green, a key piece of a multi-disciplinary site development design effort led by SRG + CannonDesign, is emerging as a central gathering and recreation space to knit together the student community – and to celebrate milestones such as commencement.

Additionally, we have implemented the first phases of the campus path network, established a new entry point, and provided additional parking to make sure everyone can access and navigate campus.

SRG + CannonDesign is currently providing a range of services as campus architectural advisors including:

  • Pre-design and visualizations for the Innovation District including site test fits and programming advice
  • Coordination with the engineering team leading site reclamation and remediation
  • Support for engagement sessions with students, university leadership, and community members
  • Establishment of campus standards

Triple Net Zero Energy

SRG + CannonDesign’s team is working with campus leaders to achieve a vision for holistic sustainability including net-zero standards for energy, water and waste. Edward J. Ray Hall was the first building to be tied into the campus groundwater exchange thermal energy system. This innovative system – part of a site infrastructure package managed by SRG + CannonDesign – takes advantage of the stability of underground temperatures, extracting heat from the ground when needed and sinking unwanted heat into the earth to cool buildings.

Our team has also supported two engineer-led teams to prepare key studies to advance OSU’s bold sustainability goals:

  • OSU-Cascades Sustainable Water Systems Plan
