Washington Behavioral Healthcare Conference with Design Principal Carl Hampson

June 17, 2021

Join Carl Hampson, SRG Design Principal, with Dr. Jürgen Unützer, Chair of UW Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, at the 2021 Virtual Washington Behavioral Health Conference: Stronger Together – A Path Forward on June 16-18, 2021. Don’t miss their presentation, University of Washington Behavioral Health Teaching Facility: A Comprehensive Integrated Care Model at 10:30am on Thursday, June 17, 2021.

This is a pivotal moment for behavioral health in the State of Washington. The University of Washington has established a bold vision for a new Behavioral Health Teaching Facility that will become the foundation for positive transformation of the entire Behavioral Health system in the state. Historical divisions between physical and mental health do not serve us well, and a new patient-centered model of care is emerging focused on treating the whole person.

In a state-of-the-art Integrated Care Program, medical, mental health, and social service professionals collaborate closely to provide a holistic approach to patient care that reinforces the connection between mind and body. The new Behavioral Health Teaching Facility (BHTF) located on the University of Washington Medical Center Northwest Campus will be a one-of-a-kind fully integrated welcoming and healing environment for individuals struggling with both physical and behavioral health problems. The building will support a full continuum of clinical services ranging from effective medication management and psychotherapies to state-of-the art neuromodulation treatments, as well as medical and surgical care for individuals with behavioral health disorders. The building will also become the home for an interdisciplinary training and workforce development program that is focused on preparing and supporting the next generation of health care providers for Washington State.

This presentation will provide an overview of the creative collaboration between clinicians and designers to develop an innovative facility that will support this new model of care. Dr. Jürgen Unützer, Chair of UW Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Carl Hampson, Lead Design Architect with SRG Partnership, will share their unique perspectives on the process and describe how the design responds to the challenging programming, planning, and design objectives established for this transformative new facility. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of establishing a vision that creates a new benchmark for behavioral health and clearly defining project goals to achieve this vision.
