A Healthcare Hub

In order to provide a higher level of care for children in Kentucky and surrounding states, Shriners opted to build their new outpatient facility on the UK Medical Center campus. This surgical center and clinic provides state-of-the-art pediatric care with a surgical suite, diagnostic clinic and radiology department, rehabilitation center, motion analysis laboratory, and supplemental support services. With the Kentucky Children’s Hospital across the street and the UK Medical Center accessible via a skybridge, the facility is now part of a hub of specialized healthcare for the region’s smallest patients.

High‑Performance

This is the first facility in the Shriners network of 22 hospitals and ambulatory care centers to be designed with a geo-thermal heating and cooling system. Early in the design phase, the team compared the cost of a closed-loop geo-thermal system with a robust conventional HVAC system and were surprised to learn it could be installed with a $1 million savings over the conventional system. The energy model shows the building will perform with an EUI of 31.3, and has received an Energy Star Rating of 86. In addition to the $1 million first cost savings, the estimated energy cost savings over the 28-year life of the HVAC equipment will exceed $4 million.
